R14 Versus St Damien’s
On a cold but sunny morning we lined up at home against arch rivals St Damien’s again at our home ground.
We lost the toss again and kicked into the breeze. With Rechelle back from Vic duties and starting on the bench it gave us the flexibility to finally rotate players. The first quarter saw a tense struggle as St Damien’s opened the scoring with a goal by their captain Becc after a strong mark in the goal square. Our girls shared the footy and continually attacked against the breeze only to score 2 points.
First Qtr;
Darebin: 0.2. 02
St Dam: 1.0. 06
The second saw our girls get into gear and apply pressure around the contest and started to run the ball and kick out to space. The forwards rewarded the work up the field by locking the ball in and applying enormous pressure scoring 3 goals 2 points in a very good quarter. We just need to take our time with goal kicking!
Half time:
Darebin: 3.6. 24
St Dam: 1.0. 06
The third quarter was going to be the test with St Damiens kicking with the breeze. They attacked several times only to have our back line repelle everything. The works done by all this quarter was fantastic as the game was taken from St Damiens grasp. Even though we did not score we limited them to one solitary point.
The back line and mids worked very hard to limit the opposition to one scoring opportunity (again by Richo) Well done girls.
3rd Qtr:
Darebin: 3.6. 24
St Dam: 1.1. 07
With the breeze at our back the girls were asked to be patient and work the ball into our congested forward line with skill and pace. They did with ease and the only downfall was our goal kicking with 2.4 being kicked. Hopefully we have the yips out of our system now as we lead into the finals next week.
Final scores:
Darebin: 5.10. 40
St Dam: 1. 1. 07
Congratulations girls on being the minor premier. Again! This is not achieved easily, as a matter of fact its only done with hard work and commitment to each other. Well done.
A special thanks to Rechelle and her family Tommy, Tracy and Jake who all chipped in and helped on the day after coming back late Sat night from Canberra. Our thoughts are with all the family after the sudden passing of Tommy’s sister during the week. The teams thoughts are with you all. There is no doubt without their help we would not take the park on most game days.
See you all at training on Wednesday as we now prepare for the real stuff!
