VFLW Round 11 vs Essendon

Darebin Falcons 1.1-7 def by Essendon 9.10-64

Darebin took their game to Essendon this week with plenty of fight but were ultimately unable to stop the fast scoring ladder leaders.  The Falcons worked hard and were competitive to the ball, holding the Bombers to 3 goals in the first half.  The firepower of the Essendon forward line meant that the Falcons were over-run with a 6 goals to none in the second half.

The Falcons family turned up with lots of cheers and posters celebrating the milestones which included 100 senior games for Gena Lawson-Tavan, 100 senior  games for Emma Mackay and 50 senior games for Vic Blackwood.

The first quarter was played in Essendon’s forward 50, with a quick goal in the first 2 minutes.  The Falcons backline steadied, and then held up well, with the midfielders and forward line running hard and linking up well to bring the ball back out of danger.

The second quarter the Falcons were able to get the ball into their own forward with a bit more intent.  Trinity Mills showed some good composure under pressure from the defenders.  Running towards goal, she was able to steady and kick a good goal.  The Bombers were able to bring a few coordinated attacks later in the quarter, and took a 16 point lead into the main break.

Essendon stepped it up in the third quarter and had just too many options in attack.  At the last break, Coach Kate Tyndall challenged her players to make more of their opportunities.  With a renewed intensity the Falcons were able to stem the flow and even bring up some good attacks on their own goal.  Essendon had the wind in their sails however, and still managed to add another 2 goals,   Tyndall was rather philosophical about the match.  “A credit to Essendon, they are a strong side, and ran over the top of us in that third quarter”

With only 3 games left for the home and away season, this loss has left Darebin just out of the finals on percentage, and will need some good footy to take on another finals contender Geelong this week.

Come down and see the team in action.  Next match will be Saturday 14 May, Darebin playing Geelong at Preston City Oval, 11.00am.
