Undefeated Falcons take out One Day Central flag

image001The Darebin Falcons have won their second consecutive premiership after defeating Edinburgh on the weekend.

Game one saw Edinburgh set 90 for victory and after losing an early wicket, the Falcons captain Julia Boyle, and vice captain Rebecca Hickmott came together to take control, leading their side to the victory target in just 23 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Hickmott finshed on 44 not out while Boyle finished unbeated on 38.

After a comfortable 9 wicket win to the Falcons in game one, the Burras bounced back to make game two a much tougher battle.

Set 118 to win, the Falcons were in trouble early when game one star Hickmott was dismissed with the score on 13.  Taryn Escreet followed three runs later and when opener Kristy Carbis was caught on 14 the Falcons were 4/33 with the pressure building.  Boyle (25) combined with Fiona O’Connor (17) to take the score past 50 with both batters looking settled at the crease.  However two quick wickets brought two new batters to the middle and the game was back in the balance.

The Darebin lower order, led by Louise Potter (25), stood up to push the score closer to the victory target, however time was running out.  With three runs needed off the final three balls everyone was on edge.  A four hit off the 4th ball of the final over brought the home crowd to their feet and the Falcons their second consecutive premiership after taking out the One Day North West competition last season.

For the Falcons it capped off a brilliant season going through undefeated as well as winning the VWCA T20 competition last week.
