Darebin Falcons V LaTrobe University
Darebin Falcons made light of their injury woes by strolling to a 4-1 Women’s State League Division Two North West victory over La Trobe at Capp Reserve on Sunday.
Missing a few of their regulars, the Falcons were forced to call on players from their Metro League team but they barely skipped a beat.
It was two familiar names who combined for the opening goal 10 minutes in as Carolyn Monk laid the ball off for Nicky Leitch to drive a shot into the top corner, giving La Trobe’s keeper no chance.
Eliza Eddy was rewarded for her superb Metro League form with a run here and responded with a promising display capped with a well-taken goal as Darebin established a 2-0 lead by half-time.
However, there was some bad news for Eddy, who later went to hospital with a suspected broken wrist after copping a nasty blow from a La Trobe defender.
Shaken by this incident early in the second half, the Falcons lost their way and the visitors capitalised by pulling a goal back.
But they soon restored their two-goal lead as another Metro player, Amy Higginson, finished off some good work by right winger Niddy Morgan.
And the result was put beyond doubt when Carmen Sandmann coolly converted a penalty awarded for handball.
The win sees Darebin move third in the ladder with one match to be played, away to Keilor Park next weekend.
