Round 11 Western Eagles vs Darebin Falcons
Darebin Falcons went down to Western Eagles on Sunday despite producing a fighting display against one of the Women’s State League Division Two North West’s premier teams.
The second-placed Eagles, who had defeated Darebin 6-1 in the second game of the season, managed a 3-0 scoreline this time around, with the third goal coming in the dying minutes.
The home side’s two-goal lead came with the assistance of a strong breeze in the first half, leaving the Falcons reasonably satisfied with their efforts at half-time.
With the wind at their backs, Darebin enjoyed a greater share of possession after the break and spent more time in their attacking third, but were unable to convert that into goals.
Niddy Morgan, who came on up front at half-time despite carrying an injury, had the Falcons’ best chance on the break but saw her goal-bound shot saved by the Eagles keeper.
With their leading goalscorer, Nicky Leitch, also struggling with injury, the Falcons lacked firepower and the Eagles, who along with Bulleen have set the pace at the top of the ladder for most of the season, were able to snuff out the visitors’ threat.
It doesn’t get any easier for Darebin this weekend when they welcome Bulleen to Capp Reserve but, after that, they will hope to string together some solid results as they press for a top-four finish.
