Women’s State League 2 North West – Latrobe Uni vs Darebin Falcons Rnd 14
Round 14 saw the Falcons playing away to Latrobe University on a waterlogged pitch in what was a MUST win game. The last time the 2 met, the Falcons were forced to forfeit the game as no referee turned up and club policy dictates that we will not play unless we have access to a qualified referee, due to safety concerns. This had left the team with a point to prove. While it was a battle between those at the bottom end of the table, the Falcs were determined to get a win on the board and the ladder positions certainly didn’t reflect the quality of the game.
Given the wet and muddy conditions both teams battled hard for the first 20 mins. Latrobe had a few chances with Sal Rees starring in goal, and great defensive work by Carmen, JB and Lauren thwarting their attempts, before Heather played through a ball to Nicky, now playing up front and she smashed it home to get the Falcons on the board. Just a few minutes later Heather knocked in a great corner (a secret weapon for the Falcons this season) and Sina did a great turn in the box knocking home goal number 2.
With the pressure off and the Falcons rotating players frequently in the second half everyone wanted to get in on the action with Nicky, Sina and Heather all scoring after great build up play by the team. The final score 5 – 1 was a great result for the Falcons lifting us off the bottom of the ladder. It is indicative of how the team has been playing all season, but with most of our injured players now back on the park, and everyone playing well, we are finally getting some results on the board.
