The Darebin Falcons played host to the Brunswick Zebras and two teams from the Warrnambool Wolves last weekend when the inaugural “Zoo” Soccer Tournament took place on Capp Reserve on March 24th.
The table was evenly poised after the first two round with each team with a win and a loss so the finalists would be decided in the final round of the sectional draw. The Zebras put on a fighting show against the Wolves (Yellow) but were unable to come up with a win so the Wolves (Yellow) with two wins on the board, having earlier beaten the Falcons 1-0, were certain to make the final. The Falcons played the Wolves (Pink) on the adjacendent field in a close encounter which finished in a draw. But with a better goal difference, the Falcons advanced to the first-place play off.
There they met the Wolves (Yellow) again and were intent on avenging their earlier defeat. Some nice passing moves, thumping shots, spectacular runs and solid defence from helped the Falcons over the line, taking out the final 3-0 and winning a piece of silverware for the trophy cabinet.
Organised in conjunction with the Brunswick Zebras, this tournament served as a pre-season warm up for these soccer teams but with the convivial atmosphere and healthy competitive spirit shown by all participants, this event looks certain to be repeated in coming years. Thanks to Merissa from Brunswick Zebras who put in a lot of hard work to get this tournament off the ground.
