Darebin Falcons notched their second victory of the Women’s State League Division Two North West season on Sunday, downing local rivals Brunswick Zebras 2-1.
The scoreline did not tell the whole story as the Falcons had numerous chances to add to their lead but just could not find the back of the net.
Right winger Niddy Morgan terrorised the Brunswick defence, sending over numerous dangerous crosses as the visitors looked to secure the three points.
But, in the end, Darebin were indebted to keeper Ang Mackie who, despite having little to do in the second half, was alert enough to rush off her line and thwart the Zebras as they appeared set to grab an undeserved share of the spoils.
As has become expected, the Falcons again faced much younger opposition in the Zebras, who might be surprised to learn that the combined ages of Darebin’s two goal scorers was 88!
The goals both came in the first half from Caroline Monk, after a spell of sustained pressure, and Jo Rooney, thanks to some good work down the left from Nicky Leitch.
Despite the win, the Falcons remain sixth in the ladder but importantly the three points keep them in touch with the teams above them.
This Sunday, the Falcons are at home to Yarra Jets, who sit one place below them with just one draw to their name this season.
