On a cold and muddy morning down at JC Donath Reserve in Keon Park, the mighty Darebin Falcons Youth Girls Team took on Montmorency FC.

Kicking into the wind, the girls burst out of the blocks with both Shannon and Dani scoring excellent goals. Vanessa took an amazing mark over two Montmorency players showing her strength overhead. Defensive pressure was in full flight as Dani made a hard tackle which could be heard in neighbouring suburbs! As usual she gets straight back up. The falcons are looking good with 3 Goals in the first quarter.

YG SingingStarting the 2nd Quarter strongly, Sarah takes a screamer mark but unfortunately the mark isn’t paid but that doesn’t faze her, as she takes four girls on and kicks a brilliant goal! Superstar ruck Shannon is on fire as usual dominating the ruck and tapping it straight to our midfielders. Phungy is loading up on possessions but in doing so proceeds to be accidently coat hanged. Abbie completes an amazing sprint to full back which some would say is truly inspiring. Cool, calm and collected Elise is playing smart football again which just cements her on-field leadership. The siren sounds and the girls get a well-deserved half time break.

The 3rd quarter kicks off with Mei going up in a big contest in the forward line resulting in a free kick. Mei takes her kick and it soars over Goal Umpire and dad Malcolm’s head. Rumours are already spreading about Malcolm getting a possible call up to AFL level! Once again the ball heads down to the forward line with Mei getting a goal assist and passing it onto Sarah who kicks another goal. Great team work all around. Gen gets into the action dodging ten people and then kicks a goal on her non-preferred foot! Just when you thought where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, Carmen takes on the opposition with a killer bump. Loz takes an awesome mark in the forward line just before the siren sounds. She musters up a remarkable goal to add to the Falcons total.

The 4th quarter gets underway with Chloe putting on a fierce tackle which gives the falcons a great centre clearance. Rechelle is in fine form kicking a goal from 50 out near the boundary (practically in the bushes).
World’s best water runner Alanah is having a competition with her brother- who are both rising to AFL water running potential. There must be something in the water as the ball once again comes down into the forward line and Elise snaps a beautiful goal. Shan attempts to specky, killing both herself and the opposition, doing a classic gunners jess move. Rechelle hands the ball to Loz who makes no mistake and kicks it through the big sticks. Abs has been working hard all day but unfortunately her gravitation towards the point posts seems unstoppable. Chloe kicks into the forward line, setting up another goal for the Falcons. The Siren sounds and the final score reads 13. 8. 86 to 0. 0. 0 which means the falcons sit comfortably on top of the NFL Youth Girls ladder.

Special mentions-

  • Whitty who ran boundary for the game who got red carded by the umpire for a terrible kick back to the centre
  • Jess and Em for giving phungy a ‘motivational massage’ on field after a hard hit
  • Vanessa for kicking the ball into the opposition’s crutch- Ouch!

Richo for cleaning the rooms after the game (see photo)
