Falcons-Logo-full-colourRound 10 – Darebin Falcons vs Berwick Hawks

Premier Reserves

In the howling wind at Edwin Flack Reserve, the Falcons Reserves took on the fourth placed Hawks. After an early scare, the Falcons kept possession of the ball in their forward line for most of the first quarter, however some errant kicking and rushed shots kept the team goalless until Cath Rees soccered through the Falcons first. Shortly after, a quick transition through Trashby, Socksy, Sommer and Bec led to Cath Rees’ second. Sommer was excellent, attacking the ball fiercely and shrugging off tackles. The Hawks continually struggled to clear the ball out of their defensive half. This forward pressure led to the quarter’s third goal, Gemma’s swift handball setting up Shaz for a quick snap from the goal square.

Kicking into the wind in the second quarter, Trashby, as always, showed her usual dominant attack on the ball. Shaz soccered through her second goal and Roi continued to make the Hawks’ forward line impenetrable. Mattie then spotted up Bec in front of goal, who converted and the Falcons entered the second half 36 points up.

Despite running out the game as clear winners, the Falcons were disappointed in their performance in the second half, with the standard of the play diminishing as the game wore on. Players ran out of legs and this was particularly damaging in the last quarter when Berwick had the wind and kicked a couple of goals from turnovers. Something to work on for next week’s tough match against Sunbury.

Premier Division

In the Falcons first game since bringing back the (g)love, the team faced not only the tough opposition of the Hawks, but the demonic interference of the Berwick gale. Berwick got the jump on the Falcons early, kicking two quick goals with the wind. The Falcons midfielders then took charge to clear the ball swiftly out of the centre, giving our forwards plenty of opportunities. Stepho took a mark inside fifty and kicked truly on the run to give the Falcons their first goal. Darebin then had more control of the ball, despite the difficult conditions, and kicked two more goals to lead at the break.

The Falcons then took advantage of the wind in the second quarter, kicking seven goals and holding Berwick scoreless. Shaz, in her second game for the day, kicked two great goals in as many minutes.

In the second half, the Falcons continued their dominance, with Jane weaving in and out of trouble in front of goal and Georgia providing a strong target, taking tough marks and converting in difficult conditions. Sammy lead strongly up the ground and Coutta kicked a great backliner’s goal.

In the final quarter, the Falcons continued their dominance but wasted some opportunities in front of goal. Shivers took a couple of fantastic contested marks as the Hawks tried desperately to clear the ball out of their defense.

The Falcons now have a bye to prepare for the tough match away against Diamond Creek.

Special Mentions:

–       Shaz’s salute to the Reserves after her fantastic sliding mark: a confident gesture as she walked back off the mark, before the goal had even been kicked!

–       Roey provided a thoroughly considerate soft landing for a speccy taken over the top of her.

–       Sammy’s goal, kicked over her own head. One for the highlights package.

–       On a serious note, we are taking donations (cash, cheque or credit) to help fund some anger management sessions for Schwager.
