Darebin Falcons v Cairnlea

Saturday saw the return of Falcons international travellers Nadine and Carmen as the team took on Cairnlea at home. The first 10 minutes of the match saw play swing from end to end with several attempts at goal for both teams. The first goal was scored after the ball was picked up just outside the area and struck with some power: the ball swung and dipped like a Jabulani and finally dropped under the bar, just over Ruth’s outstretched hand into the net. 1-0 to Cairnlea. Falcons continued to attack and the introduction of aAnge on the left and Niddie on the right wing gave Darebin width and another avenue to goal.

The highlight of the match was arguably the highlight of the season. With pressure mounting and a dangerous attack by Cairnlea down the wing, Niddie rose and headed the ball away, possibly the first header from Niddie in a Darebin shirt!!

For the second week in a row, Falcons won and missed a penalty. Despite the even play a second goal was scored by Cairnlea; a fierce shot could only be parried aside and rolled painfully over the line. Cairnlea went into the main break 2-0 up.

The second half was played in wet and windy conditions, but the  Falcons played with passion cheered on by a healthy gathering of supporters, four and two legged and were unlucky not to score. Nicky and Jo had several excellent attempts on goal, one missing by only inches.

The defence held strong and adapted well to a tighter structure closing down Cairnlea’s dangerous attack conceding only one more goal before the final whistle.

The Falcons are away next Saturday against Melbourne Bears.
