Considering the large Darebin representation in the upcoming Melbourne vs. Western Bulldogs game, it should come as no surprise that 12 Darebin ladies were selected in the 28-woman squad to represent Victoria during the National Championships in Cairns from June 17 to 22.
Falcons selected in the Victorian State squad:
Aasta O’Connor
Daisy Pearce
Darcy Vescio
Elise O’Dea
Jessica Dal Pos
Karen Paxman
Katie Brennan
Lauren Arnell
Melissa Hickey
Natalie Wood
Stephaine Simpson
Nicole Callinan
Aasta’s tireless ruck work and long, accurate kicks were no doubt factors that contributed to her selection and the class of Daisy Pearce was far too hard to overlook. Darcy gets the chance to display her skill up forward while Junior, Jess and Paxman will add speed and flare to the Big V midfield, all possessing great skills by hand or foot as well as great decision making.
Katie’s move from Queensland means she will spearhead the Vics forward line and Loz is another fantastic forward option, whether competing in the air or winning it on the ground. Hickey and Woody are sure to play major roles in the V’s defence. Steph, much like Loz, is a great forward line inclusion who can also push into the midfield and although named as an emergency, Nic’s versatility means she would be a superb option at either end of the ground.
A big congratulations also goes to Janeo, who will serve as an assistant coach to head coach Peta Searle.
Well done and congratulations on gaining selection to all 12 Falcons. It’s remarkable that so many in the Victorian squad also don the Falcons guernsey each weekend.
