It was a perfect day for soccer as Darebin’s newest group- the metro team- lined up against West Preston for their first match of the season. Knowing they were up against a tough opposition, and with many first-gamers on board, the Falcons went out with the aims of getting settled into their positions and learning to play together as a new team.

The first half opened with a couple of quick goals from West Preston, and the Falcons could see they had a challenge ahead. Nevertheless, the team maintained good defensive pressure, despite the score being 8-0 at the half-time break. Sal Rees deserves a special mention for her gutsy introduction to goal keeping- the scoreboard could have looked even more grim had it not been for her many courageous saves.

In the second half, the team took to the field determined to keep the pressure on and to try and improve on the first half. Things were looking up as the Falcons came close to scoring early in the second half, only to have their attempts thwarted by the skills of the West Preston goalkeeper. Despite not getting a score on the board, the team managed to keep West Preston to 3 goals in the second half, showing grit and determination as the clock wound down.

In what was somewhat a baptism of fire for the metro team, all players managed to keep their heads up and the team is looking forward to seeing continued improvements as the season wears on.
