Eagles v Falcons: Battle of the Big Birds

Darebin Falcons soccer team headed west to take on the Western Eagles in the battle of the big birds.
From the kick off feathers flew as the Falcons rattled the Eagles cage. The Eagles sit second on the ladder and expected an easy win against Darebin. The Falcons had other ideas and stormed into the lead taking advantage of the wind , Niddie crossed for Jo to slot home. After threatening for weeks to score, Jo finally broke through for a deserved goal!

One nil was always going to be a dangerous score line and this proved the case with the Eagles equalising in the second half. Darebin conceded a corner and an accurate cross was met with a powerful header from the Eagles captain; the ball screaming past the outstretched Ruth in goal.

Play remained even for much of the second half. With the Eagles having the wind behind them , Darebin had to defend with numbers behind the ball. Excellent defence from Kat on the right and Sal on the left meant that the Eagles scoring opportunities were limited.(Sal’s run up the left wing over the half way line to be met by a line of angry looking Eagles was a highlight!)  Jas and Brenda dominated the centre and were unlucky to finally concede with 20 minutes to go. Some neat passes from Sina and smart turns from Nicky ensured the game was alive right to the final whistle.

Carmen and Beth kept the dangerous Western midfield quiet, and Maria joined the action in the second half to add steel up front but Darebin were unable to score.

Despite the Eagles downing the Falcons , pride was restored and beers at the pub afterwards went down well!(photos)
