Falcons take out T20 premiership
Yesterday saw the final of the VWCA Twenty20 final between Darebin and Yarra Valley. After a delayed start by an hour and a half due to Melbourne’s extreme weather over the past few days, the final went down to the last over.
Yarra Valley won the toss and sent Darebin in to bat. Darebin lost quick wickets early but steadied to be 6/74 after their 20 overs. Faele OConnor was the stand out with the bat for Darebin making 34 runs. For Yarra Valley, Captain Joanne Van Mourik, made sure that her team didn’t have to chase down too many runs by bowling a tight opening spell, taking 4/11 off her 4 overs.
With Yarra Valley only needing just over 3 runs per over to clinch a win against Darebin, it was always going to be a challenge. With an extremely wet outfield making scoring difficult, Yarra Valley started their innings in good touch with Van Mourik and Kelly Tarr getting the visitors off to a reasonable start before Tarr was caught for 11.
Van Mourik made a steady 27 for Yarra Valley but once Van Mourik fell for the fourth wicket, it made it even more difficult for Yarra Valley to chase the 74 runs for victory. Yarra Valley needed 12 runs off the last over, with two wickets in hand to win the final, but tight bowling by Darebin restricted the visitors to 9/67 at the end of the 20th over. Darebin’s captain Julia Boyle bowled exceptionally well to help her side to victory, taking 4/17.
Darebin won the inaugural Twenty20 competition for season 2009/2010 and will be presented a cheque for $750 at the VWCA presentation night on April 16 at Moonee Valley Racecourse.
